Cap off a leisurely day of exploring Southport with a scenic walk along the waterfront, courtesy of the Southport Pier and Riverwalk. Located on the edge of Howe and Bay Streets, and therefore easy to reach for veritably any Downtown Explorer, this scenic walk is a great place for fishing, birdwatching, or just settling into a wooden bench and admiring the miles of open water views.
The Southport Pier and Riverwalk overlooks the miles-wide Cape Fear River and Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) with distant views of the outlaying barrier islands located well across the river. The path to the pier is lined with benches and is set against a scenic backdrop of historic homes and marinas, while the wooden pier itself extends well into the water, with ample seating and lights for late-evening strolls. Anglers are welcome to drop a line for sheepshead, trout, bluefish, mullet, and other saltwater species that congregate close to shore, while birdwatchers will love the ample opportunities to spot herons, egrets, ibises, and pelicans in their natural environment. With distant views of the Oak Island Lighthouse, and plenty of room to stretch out and relax, this scenic park-style walkway and pier is a beautiful venue that’s a must-see for any Southport water lover.
Arlie Gardens is home to a stunning collection of natural gardens and eye-catching artworks which continually impresses visitors to the Wilmington area. Established in 1901, and originally used as a private garden for the wealthy Pembroke family, the garden has since been transformed into a public attraction that’s dotted with thousands of camellias, magnolias, wisteria, azaleas, and other southern blooms that thrive in the warm coastal climate. The azaleas are arguably the star of the show, as there are more than 100,000 red, white, and magenta hued-azaleas to admire.
Visitors to historic Southport who want to make a beach escape, or Carolina Beach travelers who need an easy yet scenic route to head south will find the Southport / Fort Fisher ferry a convenient yet completely unique way to explore the southern North Carolina coastline. Though just a short 35 minute ride from the mainland to Pleasure Island, (the home of Fort Fisher State Park, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach), this ferry trip nonetheless gives its passengers exceptional views of the Cape Fear River, and an incredible story to take back home.
