Booking the best vacation rental experience:

Getting the most from your budget:

  • Summer months are high season in Oak Island. Book your Southport vacation home in Fall or Spring months to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Look for your local Southport area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have money saving offers on nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Planning and picking a perfect Southport rental:

  • Start by having your group agree to vacation dates and a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Happier Than a Byrd with a French Fry: West Beach Home with Ocean Views and Easy has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Southport rental home search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is often available on booking pages. Otherwise, call the property owner before booking the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If there's an individual Southport beach you simply love, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or costs applied to your invoice.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • At Check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent resource to find the best local scenic spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Re-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a great vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
