Tips and Tricks to get the very best vacation home experience:

Finding the best value:

  • Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. To find the best value, consider changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • The sooner you can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are booked early. Booking your rental property 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Southport area travel guide magazines which include special deals, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Narrow your Search:

  • First and foremost, have your group commit to vacation dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Ocean and Sound views with wall to wall windows! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Southport vacation rental search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available online. If they are not listed, call the property owner before you book your home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish what bed configuration is suitable for your group.
  • Does your family require specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about pet restrictions before booking.

More tips for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
  • During check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be respectful. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental home while you're away. Protect your property!
  • At departure, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
