Tips to get the perfect Southport vacation home experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • To get the best value, change your trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm weather, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
  • The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Booking your rental six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Southport visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain discounts for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Choosing the perfect vacation home:

  • Begin by choosing trip dates and a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Paws Awhile: Slow down, pause awhile at Paws Awhile! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before you reserve the property. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation group.
  • If there's a certain Southport attraction you love, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the host's information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Upon check-in, record any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on great ratings to inspire more reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will appreciate that you share your review find their best vacation home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
