The Surf Shack at BHI is the best place for your family and friends to experience the magic of Bald Head Island. With 2 bedrooms each with their own bathroom, it is ideal for 2 couples or a family with kids. Located in the relaxing neighborhood of Surfman's Walk, it is only a short bicycle ride or golf cart to East Beach or Shoals Club.
Appreciate your morning coffee on the porch, ride to the market for coffee, and spend your days at the beach.

We have a one year old so have outfitted the home to be well equipped for young families.

Kid features: 2 pack and plays, a enormous walk in closet that fits one of the pack and plays for infant/toddlers to sleep in (completely dark with outlets for monitors), Dohm sound machines in both rooms, a high chair, and an inflatable bath tub. We also have seatbelts on the golf cart for additional safety while driving around. Additionally, if you would like help in securing a babysitter for some days or nights during your time on the island, we are happy to provide a few resources to find those. We always adore having the option of an adults nighttime out and there are tons of sweet high school + college girls on the island with their family during the summer who appreciate to babysit.

FAMILY PETS: We do allow a max. of one pet, no cats (dogs only) and must be modest or medium size. Please note there will be a pet fee and family pets are not allowed on the furnishings.

SHOALS CLUB ACCESS. Info for temporary membership will be sent after booking.

We also provide a brand new 4 person golf cart. If you would like to rent an additional cart that can be done through Cary Cart Company on the island by visiting their website.

There are bicycles and beach chairs for you to use while you are there. In addition, we have books, puzzles, games, and everything you should need for the duration of your stay to make it the ideal hideaway.

About the Area

Located near the beach, this cottage is in Cape Fear Station, a neighborhood in Bald Head Island. Smith Island Museum of History and North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport are cultural highlights, and some of the area's attractions include North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and Bald Head Island Information Center.

Getting the best Southport rental experience:

Find your perfect rental:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Bald Head Island. To book the most suitable vacation home within budget, we suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities.
  • In the Southport area, The sooner you can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Booking your rental property six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Southport visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain deals for nearby tours and attractions.

  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the host before you book your rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to determine what is best for your group.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let crooks spoil your trip.
  • Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a great time? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
