Getting the best rental home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • To find the best value, consider changing your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Southport area visitors guides which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Southport area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Selecting and booking the best Southport vacation home:

  • Choose dates and maximum budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. 2 miles to UNCW, 5 miles to the beach & the best central location in town! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is often available online. Otherwise, call the host before you reserve your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what configuration is best for your group.
  • If there's an individual Southport attraction you are enamored with, keep an eye out for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
  • Some rentals allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.

Tips for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute is filed.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Just before checking out, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a terrific vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
