Strategies for getting the best rental home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is high season in the Southport area. To find the best value, consider shifting your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers typically offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Narrow your Search:

  • Choose vacation dates and budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Coast Awhile in Ocean Isle Beach has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Southport rental home search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before reserving the vacation home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental

Advice for a smooth stay:

  • Get the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many difficulties.
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Upon arrival, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great source for finding the best local attractions.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • At departure, complete a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent ratings to compel new reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
