Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Get the most from your budget:
- Reserving a rental home in the Spring or Fall is a great way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable homes.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Property management companies often offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Southport area visitors guide magazines that include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Southport area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Select dates and max budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. ?Island Time 1 Block From The Beach? has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property management company before you reserve the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds.
- Are you visiting for a single event? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
Know before you go:
- Add the property manager's contact information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Record any issues with the property during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if damages are assessed.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor. Often, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
